Halifax Square Tote (Haus on Market History Collection)

DescriptionHaus and Market Foundation is dedicated to uncovering and preserving Black history of the city of Petersburg. Through a walking tour and screen-printing project we were able to expose a group of students to the locations, images, and information about Petersburg’s’ beloved Halifax, a once thriving commerce are for Black people and business owners during segregation. We focused the tour specifically on the arts and culture spaces, including The Rialto Theatre, The Gem Theatre, and Club Chatterbox. Students learned about the Chitlin’ Circuit and how it played a big roll in bringing big names to Petersburg to perform. With such a great response from the community, we were able to provide some of these items to share with you all.
